Symbol Mapping in a Trade Copier: When XAUUSD Is GOLD

Brokers name the same instrument differently: gold is XAUUSD on one account and GOLD on another. How symbol mapping makes a copied trade land on the right instrument.

Why a Symbol Name Is Not Enough

A trade copier takes a trade on one account and opens it on others. The trade it copies is not "buy gold". It is "buy this symbol", and a symbol is a name a broker chose. Brokers do not always name the same instrument the same way: gold might be XAUUSD on one account and GOLD on another.

That matters as soon as the accounts sit at different brokers or on different platforms. A sender and its receivers can sit on different platforms and brokers, and nothing forces their symbol lists to agree.

Quick Answer

Symbol mapping tells the copier which symbol on each receiver corresponds to each of the sender's symbols, so a trade copies to the right instrument even when brokers name it differently. In Trada it is a table per copier: one row per sender symbol, one column per receiver. Automap fills it in and suggests close matches; any cell can be set by hand.

What Happens Without a Mapping

Suppose the sender trades XAUUSD and a receiver's broker calls the instrument GOLD. Until the copier is told that the two are the same instrument, there is nothing on that receiver for the trade to open on. In Trada this shows up as a failed copy that names the symbol: the symbol is not mapped on that receiver, or the broker does not offer it.

The cost is not the failed order itself. It is the gap it leaves: the sender is in a position that one of the receivers never opened, and the accounts no longer hold the same book. Nothing on the receiver looks wrong, because nothing happened there. The copier log is where the gap is visible.

How Symbol Mapping Works in Trada

Symbol mapping is set per copier. It opens from the copier's detail page with Map Symbols, which is enabled once a sender is configured. Mappings are specific to that copier.

The table has one row for each of the sender's symbols and one column for every receiver.

ColumnWhat it does
StatusEnables or disables copying for this symbol
Master SymbolThe sender's symbol. Read-only
ReceiverThe symbol it maps to on that receiver account. Editable, one column per receiver

So the row for XAUUSD can read XAUUSD under one receiver and GOLD under another. The sender trades one symbol; each receiver gets the name its own broker uses.

Automap and Mapping by Hand

There are two ways to fill the table in.

  • Automap sets every receiver's mapping to match the sender's symbol name, with a progress bar while it runs. It can also suggest close matches, such as GOLD for XAUUSD.
  • By hand: choose Edit on a cell and pick the receiver's symbol from the dropdown of instruments available on that broker.

Changes save immediately. There is no Save button, and each change is confirmed on screen. A search box filters the table by the sender's symbol name.

A suggested match is a suggestion. Read the rows for the instruments you trade before relying on them, and place one small test trade on the sender to see that each receiver opens the instrument you expect. The help page on symbol mapping shows the table.

Switching a Symbol Off

The Status toggle on each row controls whether that symbol copies at all.

  • Enabled: trades on this symbol copy to the receivers.
  • Disabled: trades on this symbol are not copied, and the row dims.

Enable All and Disable All switch every symbol at once. This is how a copier is limited to the instruments it is meant to replicate.

A disabled symbol is silent: nothing is logged for it. If a symbol never appears in the log at all, check its Status before looking anywhere else.

When a Symbol Still Does Not Copy

The help pages name two cases.

What you seeLikely causeWhat to do
A failed copy that names the symbolThe symbol is not mapped on that receiver, or the broker does not offer itOpen Map Symbols and set or correct the receiver's symbol
Nothing logged for the symbolThe symbol is disabled in the mapping tableRe-enable it in the Status column

Each row of the copier log carries a timestamp, the event type, a description, the symbol, the accounts it went from and to, and a related trade ID where there is one. The log can be filtered by event type, account, symbol and date range, so one symbol on one receiver is quick to isolate. A change to a mapping is logged too, as its own event type.

What Mapping Cannot Do

Mapping translates a name. It cannot add an instrument. If a receiver's broker does not offer the mapped symbol, that instrument cannot copy to that account.

Two more limits are worth knowing before building on it.

  • Mappings do not travel between copiers. They are specific to the copier they were set in. Duplicating a copier does carry them over: the duplicate is an exact copy, symbol mappings included, and it starts paused.
  • Mapping does not size the trade. It decides which instrument a receiver opens, not how much of it. That is the lot sizing mode, covered in lot multiplier vs fixed lot.
